A free XMPP / Jabber service

priv.vc is free to use and free to leave. We ask for as little as possible at signup: a username and a password. An email address is optional.

Where the server lives

  • The server is hosted in Sweden.
  • Every client connection requires TLS 1.2 or newer. Plaintext connections are refused.
  • Passwords are never stored in the clear.

What we keep

  • Server-side message archives (MAM) are pruned automatically after 14 days.
  • Uploaded files are stored only so your contacts can fetch them, and are removed on the same schedule.
  • Operational records — connection and error logs, abuse and anti-spam data — are kept only as long as they are needed to run and defend the service.
  • We do not sell, rent or share user data, and we run no advertising or third-party tracking.

What we cannot read

If you enable OMEMO or OTR in your client, message contents are encrypted end to end between you and the person you are talking to. We cannot decrypt them, and neither can anyone who compels us. We strongly recommend you turn it on and keep it on. Encryption is the only guarantee that does not depend on trusting the operator — including us.

Legal requests

We comply with valid legal orders that apply to us under Swedish law. We can only ever hand over what we actually hold at that moment, which is why the retention above is kept short.

Server rules

  • Do not use the service for illegal purposes.
  • Do not disrupt the server — excessive traffic, connection flooding and similar abuse are not tolerated.
  • Do not use the service to send spam or to harass other users.

Accounts and IP addresses that break these rules are blocked. In the case of denial-of-service attacks and the like, the responsible network provider is informed.

Housekeeping

  • Accounts unused for 12 months may be deleted.
  • Accounts that are registered but never logged into may be deleted after 7 days.
  • Usernames implying staff or administrative status (for example admin99) may be reclaimed.
